The countdown is coming to a close for the opening of the gates for the 2021 Weipa Fishing Classic. The committee is busy setting up at our new home grounds down at Andoom Oval. It is going to be such an amazing event and will be so great to share the venue with you all. Last year we really missed your presence at the event but we live streamed our way to victory.
Limited tickets are left, the heat and pressure is on to get the grounds ready for another record breaking Weipa Fishing Classic. Clean out those boats, check the boat and trailer registrations, check your flares, EPIRB and safety gear, service your fishing gear, get your chosen baits ready and ice down your eskies. It is 3 days to go till we kick the fishing off. Make sure you read the rules carefully and fish responsibly.
We look forward to seeing you all down at Andoom Oval for 3 days of family, fishing and fun. We have a few surprises in stall which we will share with you all on the night. We are all very excited and counting down the sleeps………
Whoa!!! 2020….. What a year!!! COVID crazy….. Who’s over this pesky virus?? Yeah so are we. But hey, the good news is that the Weipa Fishing Classic prevailed even in the face of such a wild world. What an amazing outcome – we were so proud to bring you the 15th Annual Classic via live streaming technology. We had viewers as far away as Singapore….. thanks for tuning in. Who would have thought – a virtual fishing event from your lounge room – apart from the actual fishing and weighing in – a new benchmark has been set.
With a tricky 2020 behind us now, we are already powering into 2021 – May already. We are proud to finally update our webpage with some fresh photos, links, details and updates for this years event. The 2021 Weipa Classic will now be held on the Fathers Day weekend which is now officially a long weekend as we were successful in getting the June planned public holiday moved to the Friday 3/9/21. Happy Fathers day to all you dads – a fishing long weekend with a chance of winning a boat. Wouldn’t it be nice!
This year marks 16 years for the event and we have a few new recruits join us – check out who is on the committee in out links. There is still plenty to do so if you want to join this awesome group of generous volunteers, please send us a message or email. The churn of works is well underway and our proud, honest, hard working and committed community volunteers are already breaking a sweat organising merchandise, shirt designs, organising sub committees, sponsor packs and the overall event plan. We are very excited to actually have physical people turn up this year at the amazing Andoom Oval showground’s.
We are expecting that this year this fabulous event draws even more visitors from across the country to compete in the biggest fishing competition in Cape York and arguably one of the best in the state; as well as the chance to take home a haul of prizes from the multi day family friendly event.
So its time to start putting your spare change in the fishing fund, organising your teams, planning which secret spot will produce, fish species to target and getting the fishing reels warmed up in preparation for this years 16th anniversary of the Weipa Fishing Classic.
It has been a while since we have posted anything on our website, so here is a bit of an update.
What a journey Weipa….. the age of COVID is upon us and we are all trying to understand how we maintain a sense of normality through these troubling and uncertain times.
The WFC team have been patiently sitting, watching and waiting to understand the fate of our famous and fabulous fishing classic. We have taken a bit of an educated punt and chosen to host a COVID friendly Fishing Classic this year. The 15th Anniversary of the competition seemed too good to give up on.
If you have been following us on our Facebook page, you will have seen several editions now of our Weipa Fishing Classic News where we let everyone know we are set and ready to host our 2020 Fishing Classic between 30th of October and 1st of November. That’s exciting news!!! Thank you to all our loyal followers for casting your votes and passing on your encouraging words. We are all pumped an ready to deliver.
Some key points to know and remember; 1st – we are doing our first shirt order at the end of August so get in quick to place your orders, we will be doing other orders but this one ensures we have the shirts prior to the comp (hopefully – COVID being friendly); 2nd – the next is tickets are on sale now, get in the first 300 and go in the draw for an early-bird random draw for some cool Fishing Classic gear; 3rd – we are selling tickets every Saturday on the grass near Woolies, come down and say hi and get your lucky entry into the major draw – the more tickets we sell the better the prize pool.
Ok – that’s it for now – make sure you follow us on our Facebook page and keep in touch with the developments via the Weipa Fishing Classic News.
Well we have entered into the next decade, the 20’s, with an open mind, optimistic outlook, new executive committee members and aspirations for making the 15th Anniversary of the Weipa Fishing Classic one for the memory books.
The churn of works is kicking off to prepare for this years event. Our proud, honest, hard working and committed community volunteers are already breaking a sweat drafting designs for merchandise, designs for the ever important Weipa Fishing Classic shirt, organising sub committees, sponsor packs and the overall event plan. There is a shape forming in the distance which is exciting to ponder, the possibility of the Classic being the first event to christen the Andoom Oval multi-purpose venue.
